Fourth PAsuram -EDu (mAru SEAR Padai )
avathArikai : You want to be graced only by Compassion -veRum kripai. Is there a precedent for this?
AzvAr gives examples and appeals for such a grace on him also.(Refer note 1)
mARu sEr padai nUTRuvar- The hundred who came as enemies. Their regiments. The regiments just did not help them but came separately as enemies and approached.
mARu sEAR padai nUTruvar- The immense enemity dissolved in these hundred.
manga- vanquishing the hundred like darkness in front of the lamp.
Or aivarkkAi- The unique five. The two sides being at par, You Lord stood on one side. They along with the charioteer -the five.
AivarkAi- The Lord who gave Himself to for themselves to their will.
mAyap pOAr paNNi- the creation of deceptive battle. Taking weapon after vouching not to do so, converting broad daylight into night and exposing the lifeline of the enemies. These are the deceptiveness-mAyap pOr.
nEru seidha- REducing the enemies into ashes. As said in 'kUrAi nErAi nilanAGi' .
enthAi- All right AzvAr, the grace on pANdAvAs were showered as they were subservient -bhavyar.
But even that is not observed in the case of retriving the earth in the form of yEanam.
nilam kENDA ammAnEA- When the bHumi was taken over by praLayam, Oh Lord you retrieved with such a compassion.
nilam kENDA- Neither did bhUmi appeal for retrieval nor had the gratitude -upahAra smrithi- later.Did you not do it just with compassion -veRum kripai.(Refer note 2)
ammAnEA- We should not lose our possession was the driving force to apply the grace.
thEARu gnAnathar..- The inhabitats of this divya desam precisely know the do-s and donts- anushtAnam and an-anushtAnam.
They are clear that neither following the dos- anushtAnam nor leaving the dont-s is the means but it is Him.
In that case, why should they at all follow the do-s?
That is because : It is ordained by Emperuman. These 'do-s' germinate sathvaguNAm and donts breed rajas and thamas.(Refer note 3)
sri varamangalanagar vETrirundhAi- EmperumAn also is there as if He is one of them.
vETRirundhAi- Being so amidst them, the Lord is very happy as if He has got something unattainable - peRAp pEARu.
vunnai- The persons who does not expect quid pro quo - ananya sAthyan.
engu eidhak kUvuvanEA- Thus Your grace all along were not of my efforts but out of Your grace. Being so, further efforts on my part is not required and Oh! Lord please shower YOur compassion further.
Notes:1. EmperumAn asks precedents for voluntary grace and AzvAr gives two examples. Sri KrshnA's grace on pANdavAs and on the grace of Sri varAha nAyanAr.
2. Sri NampiLLai explains that Sri vArAha nAyanAr's grace is more emphatic of compassion as there was nobody to appeal there and the Lord out of His causeless mercy, retrieved His possession.
3. Further, AzvAr observes that EmperumAn settles in this divya dEsam happily and the residents are of knowledge and follow the dos and donts having fully realised that the following of do-s or non-following of donts are not the means.
In that case, why should they follow the do-s at all is answered by the commentator.
AzvAr thus, apppeals for the same unto him.
