AvathArikai-Introduction-EDu-noatra nonbu
(Writeup by Sri Vanamamalai padmanabhan)

In the previous ThiruvAimozhi ( 5-6 -kadal gnAlam) AzvAr tried to sustain himself the pains of separation by Simulating EmperumAn (Refer Note 1 and 2) and His deeds. Despite this desperate situation i.e a state where AzvAr had to sustain himself by such simulation-EmperumAn did not Grace AzvAr with His vision. Why is this so?  EmperumAn who emerges in front of those who evince immense desire for Him, is not doing so in his case? What is the deterrent? introspects AzvAr.

The extreme desire for EmperumAn is nature of the jEvAtmA. However, due to nexus with prakruthi this is imagined as 'means' (Refer Note 3). Therefore, AzvAr proclaims His empty handedness and takes refuge in the divine feet of the Lord.

Sri VibishanAzAn realising his state, falls at Divine feet of Sri Chakravarthi Thirumagan who was surrounded by mahAraja and others (Sri SugrEvA and others) (Refer Note 4)
Similarly, The Lord who had been alone in that seashore, rests happily in the 'Srivara mangala nagar'(Refer Note 5) alongwith pirATTi, alongwith his surroundings, on Sri ThiruvananthAzvAn.

AZvAr falls at the divine feet of VA na mA malai,( Refer Note 6 ) like a rootless tree and takes refuge in Him.

On what basis, AzvAr does this act of refuge? EmperumAn looks for AthmAs desirous of being rescued by Him. AzvAr is deeply longing for such a rescue.
What else is needed for such an act, thus.

Notes: The greatness of Edu is, Sri NampiLLai commences the commentary with continuity with the previous thiruvAimozhi. The emotional entanglement of AzvAr's state is picked up from there.

1.Sustaining oneself by Simulating the Lord's act- anukkArithu tharithal

2. AzvAr simulated like EmperumAn and proclaimed that He was the one who had created the worlds, gave sasthras, is the prime  mover of one and all in the previous ThiruvAimozhi 'kadal gnAlam seidhEnum' 5-6.

3. AzvAr introspects himself- says SvAmi nampiLLai. EmperumAn being eager to rescue those who desire so but this does not happen in this case and concludes that, this state of longingness-due to connection with prakrithi is mistook as means-upAyam. The fundamental faith of our SampradhAyam is that of EmperumAn being Lord and the means. If anything else is also considered as means, then EmperumAn will distance Himself from us.

Azvar to remove this misgiving proclaims his empty handedness-Akinchanyam.

4. A simile is drawn by Sri NampiLLai when Sri VibishanAzvAn leaving everything-wealth and relatives -falls at the feet of Sri chakravarthi Thirumagan.

5.Srivaramangai ThAyAr is the divine consort in this divya desam and is known as 'Sri varamangala nagar'.
This is presently known as 'NAngunEri' situated between Tirunleveli and Nagercoil highway.

6.There is no mountain or hill in NangunEri. The towering and imposing vision of Sri Dheiva nAyaka perumAL is like a mountain high above and therefore AzvAr coins the divine name
'vA na mA malai ' in the sixth pAsuram. This is referred to by Sri NampiLLai here.
